Lars Reuterswärd

Professor and head of the Department of Architecture and Development Studies at Lund Institute of Technology, Lund University, and currently Dean of Research for the Built Environment at LTH. Holds a MSc and PhD in Architecture and is an elected member of the Swedish Royal Physiographic Society.

The Department is committed to R&D and graduate training with a focus on architecture and design in extreme environments. Currently projects are conducted in Vietnam, Cambodia, and in Tanzania, and concerning space architecture and design for LEO, but in particular for manned bases on Mars. This is done in cooperation with NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Tx.

The cooperation with NASA started in 1998 and is since then conducted through studios named STAR Design (Space and Terra Architecture & Design). Graduate students of architecture and of industrial design are annually working with NASA at the Johnson Space Center for a month on various issues related to space design. Studies include items for the ISS, and the interior layout for the Crew Return Vehicle, and for exercise equipment for astronauts, etc. Some students continue from the graduate studies to develop ideas further into Diploma works, and onwards towards R&D. The current studio is focussed on the layout and design of the Integrity, a high-fidelity mock-up for the future Mars base.
