Richard Clar’s art-in-space project, Earthstar: A Space Art Eutectic, incorporates an innovative approach to the creation of an artwork in outer space. Mineral samples, gathered from countries that support the peaceful use of outer space, will be formulated into a eutectic slurry and incorporated in the shape of a pentagonal star into the thermal protection system of a recoverable spacecraft. A highly symbolic ceramic artifact will be created from the heat generated on the surface of the spacecraft during re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.
